Overview

Dictate Bar is a macOS menu bar app that captures speech and appends finalized dictation entries to a markdown/plain text notes file.

Dictate Bar is designed to keep notes workflows simple and local-first.

Microphone and speech recognition access

Dictate Bar requests microphone access to capture your speech while dictating.

Dictate Bar requests speech recognition access to convert speech into text.

These permissions are used only for app functionality. You can change permissions at any time in macOS System Settings.

Notes storage

Dictate Bar stores your running notes file locally on your Mac at the location you choose.

Each finalized dictation is appended to that file.

Export and opening notes

Dictate Bar can open your notes file in your default editor and can export a copy of notes on demand.

Exported copies are created when you choose to export.

Data collection and sharing

Dictate Bar does not require creating an account to use core functionality.

We do not sell your personal data.

We only receive information you explicitly send us, such as support emails.

Support communications

If you contact support, we receive the information you include in your message. We use this information only to respond and provide support.
